Today, we talked to Cathrine about how Local Wolves came to be, the challenges of being editor in chief and her favorite issuu Trendspotters reads! Jump in to learn more about Cathrine and the making of Local Wolves.

Q: Hi Cathrine, thanks so much for chatting with us here at issuu today. To begin, can you tell us a little about how Local Wolves came to be?

CATHRINE KHOM: During my senior year of high school, I was (and still am) a complete music junkie at heart. In April 2012, I created Local Wolves, which was essentially a music blog and we attempted to create a few zines here and there just for fun. Eventually, through trial and error, my team and I started to publish issues, so I decided to fully run Local Wolves as an online and print publication. Never looked back since, best decision ever.

Q: What are some of the challenges of being editor in chief of Local Wolves? How do you manage those challenges?

CK: Some of the main challenges would be the curation aspect of the issue, since I’m more of a visual and detailed-orientated person, I like to see the overview of all the talents, contributors, themes, mood boards and so forth that are involved. Being consistent and cohesive with design is why I believe Local Wolves continues to push the envelope. I’ve been super drawn into multimedia in general based on my surroundings, so the overall challenge is trying to curate a design aspect that is outside of the norm while showcasing original and authentic content for our readers.

Q: What is your favorite part about running Local Wolves?

CK: Such a great question! Hands-down, working with our team on themes because this links to all the behind-the-scenes action like scouting locations to creating mood boards … the collaborative aspect is so much fun. I love working with our staff and contributors as we pitch ideas and work on fun projects in every issue.

Q: You’ve been an issuu Trendspotter for quite some time now and have curated a wide array of publications in your Trendspotters Stack. What are some of your favorite publications in your Trendspotters curation and why?

CK: I came across the publication So Young on issuu and I literally wish I could receive their print issues by mail. Such well-written articles and beautiful illustrated work by new and contemporary illustrators throughout their issues. They have the “wow” factor and I absolutely can’t get enough of their work. Highly recommended for music junkies like me!

I rave about Status Magazine all the time because I’m such a design nerd so their use of typography, fonts, color swatches and catchy taglines, I’m here for it. I appreciate all of their cohesive designs in every issue, it just keeps getting better. Their cover shoots are always so creative and I always get inspired by their issues. It’s A+ for me.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring publisher or someone who hopes to make an online magazine like Local Wolves?

CK: Consistency is key and quality over quantity. Create what you would want to read and don’t fret about the numbers, just have fun when you’re curating the content for your readers. Everything will fall into place as long as you continue to push yourself through challenges and always network when you can.
